Beginning on the afternoon of our Building Institute Day, our Academic Support Teams will start their work. We will need to look at:
Prior to the school year starting, I would like to coordinate outreach to three groups of students:
- Students we know will struggle;
- Courses that generally have more struggling students than others;
- A process to help support students who's needs emerge as the year begins.
Prior to the school year starting, I would like to coordinate outreach to three groups of students:
- Incoming Freshmen who were to be in Summer Bridge
- Sophomores who will be in some form of 20/20
- Any student who received an Incomplete in the Spring.
When school begins, struggle will primarily come in the form of attendance and engagement, then transition to include academics and performance.
Attendance and EngagementThis will begin on Day 1. As classes meet (Per. 1-4 on Thursday) each team should monitor attendance and call home the same day. This is a call about the support a student needs in order to attend.
As time goes on, we work more with families on habitual attendance problems and provide interventions, that might include an outdoor home visit. |
Academics and PerformanceThis will begin with about 40 students who have Incompletes and have work that needs to be completed in order to secure credit in courses from last spring.
Each team will work with their students to determine what assignments need to be completed and what is a reasonable timeline for that to be done. As the year continues, students will begin to have academic issues. Once a teacher reaches to a family, that teacher should refer a student to AST. Much like PST, the AST team can research or provide additional insight to the student and do additional outreach with the family. |
